PAN
GOD OF PASTURES
From the theme series “Satyrs and Gargoyles”

Yellow gold pendant/enhancer

a high-relief cameo carving

Lapis (Afghanistan)
7cm
high, with a 24” long strand
of
16mm Afgan Lapis beads
with
a 14K yellow gold clasp.
“Pan-
the God of Pastures” is from Helen’s theme series work “Satyrs and Gargoyles”.
The
theme allows for dynamic expressionism, infinite variations,
and
exaggerated features. The distorted features emit demonic pathos and induce
awe.
In
classic Greek mythology Pan is the chief god of pastures, forests and flocks.
He
is often represented with a beard and
horns
on his forehead like a goat.
Pan
was supposed to inspire irrational behavior
and
sudden fright, hence the word panic.
